Cardboard Time Machine to Hell

A number of years ago, a co-worker and I were hard at work at our Hambone Industries warehouse space. It was dusty and unpleasant conditions. Until we discovered a box of 30 year old Village Voices. It was as if we had found a cardboard time machine. I was instantly taken back to a simpler time, when Crazy Eddie ruled the marketplace and America was just beginning to learn the beauty of Reaganomics. The advertisements were my favorite part. There were great old ads for the Intellivsion games of my youth, cologne I was way to young wear. One of the only reasons I enjoyed going to New York City as a kid was to go to one of the two Forbidden Planet stores. They ran great ads on a weekly basis. The film section is where I lost it though. Great looking movies I'd never heard of, classics I had playing on fantastic double bills. A wonderful ad for Basket Case offering a free McDonald's Hamburger to the first 100 people. A Sir Run Run Shaw Kung-fu Festival! What a time to be alive. Anyways, I now present to you a few of the treasures from this bygone era.

Restaraunt Review: Beach Donuts

When one thinks of the typical 21st Century American Donut Shop, it is frequently associated with many non-doughnut items. From iced moccafracclattes to waffle sandwiches, to soup(!) many of our donut shops have lost their way. In an attempt to appeal to as wide a palate as possible they have forgotten their doughy roots. It is for this reason I was pleased to come across Beach Donut. Located in the beautiful seaside town of Clinton, Connecticut, this wonderful little shop simply sells donuts. The seating was limited to only one table, meaning dining there was not something most folks do. So I grabbed a sack and filled it with three of their donuts. I got two glazed (one for me, one for my donut loving father) and a sugar covered donut. I asked about coffee and the helpful young gentleman informed me it had been sitting since early morning and was most likely no longer any good. I thanked him for his honesty, settled the bill and hit the road. I had a hankering for some seafood, so I stopped at a nearby fish place for some scallops. I was too full at this point to dip into my sack of sweet treasures, so I put them aside. A few hours later I finally ate the donuts. By this time it was dark and they had most likely been made a good twelve hours or so earlier. They still had it though! My goodness, what delicious little bastards they turned out to be. A bit of chewiness combined with a luscious soft inside. I highly suggest next time you are in the area- brew a thermos of your own coffee, grab a sack of Beach Donuts and hit the beach. Guaranteed great day!

Restaurant Review:Doughboy Donuts & Deli

I found this little gem of a shop tucked away in South Boston. It shares space with a delicatessen, which I did not get to sample from, it being way to early for deli foods and my palate needed to be fresh for the donuts. Oh and what donuts they were! I ordered a glazed and a jelly. I find it best, when reviewing a restaurant, to order a plain glazed donut. This acts as a litmus test of sorts to gauge how well the basics of donut building have been completed. I can happily say the Doughboy chefs have done magnificent work. The glaze was applied expertly- not too little, not too much. Fluffy inside, a bit of a crunch to the outside. As for the jelly donut- powdered perfection! Instead of the usual red flavored jelly, I was pleasantly surprised when biting in to find a plume of purple jelly erupting from it's partially devoured center. The waitstaff was very pleasant and giving. I felt instantly at home! The clientele seemed to be mostly gentlemen from the nearby train station, as opposed to the usual law enforcement types one often encounters in such establishments. The decor was in the late 70's Southie Provincial style one often sees in the area. I was also pleased to see that they had hung up a few Pillsbury Doughboy figurines as a sort of mascot! I plan on revisiting the good people of Doughboy Donuts again soon.
