When one thinks of the typical 21st Century American Donut Shop, it is frequently associated with many non-doughnut items. From iced moccafracclattes to waffle sandwiches, to soup(!) many of our donut shops have lost their way. In an attempt to appeal to as wide a palate as possible they have forgotten their doughy roots. It is for this reason I was pleased to come across Beach Donut. Located in the beautiful seaside town of Clinton, Connecticut, this wonderful little shop simply sells donuts. The seating was limited to only one table, meaning dining there was not something most folks do. So I grabbed a sack and filled it with three of their donuts. I got two glazed (one for me, one for my donut loving father) and a sugar covered donut. I asked about coffee and the helpful young gentleman informed me it had been sitting since early morning and was most likely no longer any good. I thanked him for his honesty, settled the bill and hit the road. I had a hankering for some seafood, so I stopped at a nearby fish place for some scallops. I was too full at this point to dip into my sack of sweet treasures, so I put them aside. A few hours later I finally ate the donuts. By this time it was dark and they had most likely been made a good twelve hours or so earlier. They still had it though! My goodness, what delicious little bastards they turned out to be. A bit of chewiness combined with a luscious soft inside. I highly suggest next time you are in the area- brew a thermos of your own coffee, grab a sack of Beach Donuts and hit the beach. Guaranteed great day!
